the price of life

Saving the life of my next baby just got much, much more expensive. A drug company has just cornered the market on progesterone shots, which are used to prevent preterm deliveries. What used to cost $10-$20/dose from a compounding pharmacy will now cost $1000+ per dose.

Let's pause for a moment to consider the insanity of a 1000% price increase to save the lives of the absolute poorest and weakest members of our society - BABIES. But hey, this is America - if it's profitable, it must be moral.

It looks like costs will be somewhat covered for low-income women without insurance, which is a very good thing. Personally, I'm falling into the zone of people who will be totally screwed - if my insurance company will even cover this, the co-pays will likely be in the $100-$150 zone, instead of $30.

Did I mention that these shots are part of the IVF process too? Daily doses, my friends, for up to 10 weeks.

Read more here. Apparently the March of Dimes has signed off on this move. While I get that FDA approval means more consistency and accessibility, the accompanying price hike equals profiting off absolutely terrified parents. How can that be okay with the March of Dimes?

I guess this is what they mean by "partnering with drug companies" to fix our healthcare system.

I also fall into that zone of "people who will be screwed". I will most likely be prescribed this in future pregnancies since I was on it for my pregnancy with my daughter (who I lost at 25 weeks) and who knows if my insurance will cover it. If they do, I'm guessing that my copay will be huge since it will be a "name brand" drug and there won't be a generic. Not to mention that if I am taking this, I will also probably be on bedrest too, which means no working, which means disability pay (just like my last pregnancy), which is roughly half of what I usually bring home pay-wise. And out of that reduced cash flow, I'll have to pay for this expensive drug.

So, those of us in middle-income America are screwed by the drug and health insurance companies yet again.

I'm outraged for you. And they say your country is the lucky country.
I'm sorry, Jenni.

i just read that the march of dimes gets hundreds of thousands in donations from KV pharmaceuticals every years. i don't know how to live in a world where the march of dimes is in bed with the drug companies. *sigh*

One day just hoping your doctor will be on board with progesterone all the way through, the next wondering how to pay for if they are. It's just not right.
